How Many Bags of Pool Plaster Do You Need? A Simple Guide

The most common question we get at Pool Finish is also the most important one to get right before your plaster crew is standing in an empty pool: how many bags do I need?

Pool plaster and exposed-aggregate finishes like Diamond Brite, River Rok, Florida Stucco and Premix-Marbletite are sold in 80 lb bags, and what you are really buying is surface coverage. A standard finish coat is applied about 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick, so the math starts with your pool's interior surface area — floor plus walls — not just its length and width.

A quick estimating method:

  1. Measure the pool's length and width, and its average depth (shallow end + deep end, divided by 2).
  2. Floor area = length × width.
  3. Wall area = perimeter × average depth.
  4. Add floor + walls for total square footage, then divide by the coverage per bag for your finish (your supplier can confirm the exact figure for the product and thickness you are applying — pebble finishes and quartz finishes differ slightly).

Two practical tips from the counter: always round UP and buy a few extra bags from the same production lot — running short mid-job risks a visible color line where the new lot starts. And if your pool has a spa, beach entry or sun shelf, measure those surfaces too; they are the areas most people forget.
